For Men Over 40
If you have the following symptoms, you may have BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)
- Incomplete emptying
- Increased frequency of urination
- Urge to urinate
- Weak urinary stream
- Straining to urinate
- Urinating at night
If you have one or more of the above, do not hesitate to tell your physician because he or she may be able to help.
The key to saving lives is early detection. A digital rectal examination is the first procedure utilized in detecting prostate cancer. Every man over 40 should have a rectal examination as part of his regular annual physical checkup. If a nodule is detected, or if high suspicion remains, then a prostatic ultrasound should be performed. This test may reveal cancers too small to be detected by physical examination. During the prostatic ultrasound, a needle biopsy is performed to determine if cancer is present. A new blood test called a PSA (Prostatic Specific Antigen) may detect a cancer that is forming in a male with a nonpalpable nodule.
The American Cancer Society recommends that all males have a PSA level annually, beginning at the age of 50.
Hepatitis A occurs by contact with infected feces, either through direct person to person, through water, supplies contaminated with human sewage, or through contaminated food, such as raw shellfish drawn from polluted waters. In adults, a primary dose is given initially, then a booster 6 to 12 months later. In those 2 to 18 years of age, an initial dose is followed by a dose in one month and then a booster at 6 to 12 months later. Areas where the infection is present include, but are not limited to, Africa, Asia (except Japan), the Mediterranean basin, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
The hepatitis B virus can be dangerously infectious. It can lead to cirrhosis and cancer of the liver.
The virus spreads through a variety of ways:
- 1 Sexual intercourse
- 2 Contaminated needles (drug abuse, ear piercing, and tattooing)
- 3 Mother-to-mother transmission via the blood and breast feeding
- 4 Blood transfusions, skin cuts, and
- 5 Saliva.
The Hepatitis B vaccination is now recommended for all newborn infants, children, teenagers, and adults that are at a high risk for exposure to Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is also recommended for those who are traveling abroad or anticipate sexual contact with local inhabitants. It should be noted that Hepatitis B consists of three doses, an initial dose followed by a dose at one month, and then another dose in a six month period.
